Bespoke Children’s Illustrations from Scarlett, Tulip & Co

Bespoke Children’s Illustrations from Scarlett, Tulip & Co.

Bespoke Children’s Illustrations from Scarlett, Tulip & Co. It was only the other day whilst attempting a bit of decluttering that I wondered what I could or would do with the ever growing masses of drawings and artwork that Isabelle produces. She draws every single day, and I’m completely loathed to throw them away, especially now that she puts so much detail into them.

Scarlett Tulip and Co

Mermaids are the thing that she’s drawing at the moment, with lovely long tails with amazingly detailed scales and big booby shells!

Anyway, the purpose of the post is to highlight this amazing new business that was featured in our local paper where local Artist, Sim Dagger inspired by daughter Scarlett recreates your child’s drawings into a bespoke watercolour painting or pen and ink drawing which can be treasured forever. I think you’ll agree that these are pretty special.

bespoke_children's_illustrations

Over to Sim, Helen and Scarlett……

Who are you and where can we find you?

Hello, We are Scarlett, Tulip & Co, a small family business based in Exeter run by Sim Dagger, an Illustrator and Graphic Designer  and his partner Helen Kidney. They are joined on board by Scarlett-Ivy their 5 year old daughter and Tulip the family cat.  You can find us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/scarletttulipandco/  and on Instagram @scarlett_and_co  or by emailing us at scarlett@simdagger.co.uk

bespoke_children's_illustrations

What gave you the inspiration to start your business?

Sim came up with the idea one day when he found a monster drawing that Scarlett had created in one of his sketchbooks,  he decided to draw his version of her monster next to it.  He didn’t think too much about it but when he showed it to Scarlett she was so excited by it, he decided to share it on his FB and IG accounts.  People loved the idea and asked if he could do some for their children.  He offered a few to Scarlett’s friends, and shared these on FB again the children and parents were so excited by this we decided to set up a business offering this service.

We called it Scarlett, Tulip & Co as a thanks to Scarlett for inspiring us, and she thought it would be a great idea to include her pet cat Tulip in the name too.  Sim and I are the Co J.

bespoke_children's_illustrations

When did you start the business?

We are a very young business, We started the business on the 12th January this year, Sim has been an illustrator and a designer for over 10 years and has a particular interest in children’s illustration and design.

Bespoke Children's Illustrations

What do you offer?

We offer families a chance to turn a favourite piece of their children’s artwork into a treasured piece of art that can be kept forever.

We create gorgeous bespoke artwork for families to keep forever based on their children’s drawings.  We create “one off” watercolour paintings and  pen and ink drawings which are supplied professionally mounted and framed in a choice of wooden frames.  We also offer an unframed option for those who wish to frame the artwork themselves.

We take a child’s picture and Sim reimagines them using watercolour paints or simple pen and inks to give them his own twist, whilst ensuring that the artwork still retains the childlike essence of the  original picture.  We explain it as not being an attempt to improve the already talented artwork a child has created; it’s a collaboration between the unfiltered creativity of the child’s mind and then reimagined in the equally childlike mind of the illustrator. Sim begins  by sketching his imaginations, and sends photographs of the process at each stage to ensure people are happy with the direction of the artwork, when he has the approval from the family, he adds the paints and inks to complete the painting or drawing.

We can work with any image, from any age, our youngest artist so far was 2 years old, and we have created a vast range of paintings and drawings so far, including a dinosaur world, fairyland , a maniacal princess ,family portraits, and even a zombie with fire coming out of his head.  One painting had a more poignant reason behind it such as a drawing a boy did of his granny who had just passed away.

We can also create bespoke artworks as presents for children based on their interests. For example we created an illustration of a car for a little boy who loved cars, Sim was able to add a picture of the little boy driving the car, personalising it by adding his initials to the number plate.  If you have an idea get in touch and we can chat about what we could create for you!

Bespoke Children's Illustrations

As you can see, they are pretty amazing.

I may have to choose one of Isabelle’s mermaids to be painted for our Family Wall.

If you would like to find out more you can visit Scarlett, Tulip & Co through their Facebook Page and follow them on Instagram.

#Whatwedidthisweek

#whatwedidthisweek

This could be a disastrous thread to start as some week’s go by and we haven’t done anything fun, and the only achievement is tackling the ever growing ironing pile or being totally chuffed that I’ve actually seen the bottom of the laundry basket.

That’s life and for many of us these mundane tasks and household chores are the every day norm.

We have had quite a jam packed week this week.

The first and possibly the biggest fist pump goes to completing my tax return. I hate this job. Making sure that everything is accounted for is a big enough task, but each and every year I leave it to the last minute and end up being the biggest ball of stress. Each and every year there seems to be a problem with my log-in. Each and every year I have to re-set my password and each and every year I have to phone the helpline.

This year my log-in wouldn’t work, and then I kept being sent to an error page. Thankfully I got passed all of this and on Tuesday I finally got to press the send button.

Seriously, it’s like being pregnant and giving birth! You know, the bit where they hand you the baby and all the pain is forgotten. Until next time that is!

#whatwedidthisweek

This is charlie at 12 weeks when he came home with us.

#whatwedidthisweek

It was our lovely Charlie boy’s birthday on Friday. I can’t believe that he’s three already. I still refer him as our puppy, and the time has flown by so quickly. I couldn’t imagine life without my fur-baby now.

#whatwedidthisweek

I was invited to Coast View Holiday Park in Shaldon which has recently opened. It’s one of three holiday parks that the owner owns with the other two being based n Cornwall.  It has a brand spanking new restaurant called Ode & Co which has a very relaxed vibe where you can eat gazing over the amazing view of the Jurassic Coast.

#whatwedidthisweek

We tried a selection of sour dough pizza’s which were made in the open plan kitchen in an enormous wood fired oven. My fave was definitely the venison chorizo and mushroom pizza. The offer a ‘dip and dine’ offer with swimming and a pizza which we’ll definitely be taking advantage of. The prices are very family friendly as well, and they have a selection of craft beers and yummy wines if you’re not the designated driver.

#whatwedidthisweek

#whatwedidthisweek

To finish that day off, Isabelle went to her cousins birthday party at Build a Bear, and the party person in their was absolutely fantastic, keeping the kids entertained by playing games and picking out party t-shirts as well as making the bears themselves.

On Saturday had a trial at Rainbows which Isabelle really enjoyed so we’re just waiting for the registration forms now. Shame about the awful uniform and it only gets worse if she stays on and becomes a Brownie. Afterwards we went to yet another birthday party where there was a nerf gun fight. I didn’t come off to well as I got blasted in the eye. I thought a black eye was brewing but nothing came of it.

Saturday night I met up some Devon Bloggers in Coal, Exeter for a fantastic meal and cocktails. We even had lovely surprise goody bags filled with lovely treats from some of the Princesshay shops which was a really nice treat (Hotel Chocolat, The Cove, Joules, and Saks).

Sunday was the most miserable day (weather wise) but it started off great for me with a lie-in and breakfast in bed followed by a stroll around the shops (actually it was more of a stomp running from one shop to the next in the rain) and back home for an indian feast.

How was your week?

A trip to Haldon Forest with the Doogie

A trip to Haldon Forest.

Haldon has become one of our go-to places since Charlie came along.

We’ve always enjoyed a good walk, but it’s a massive bonus that Haldon has gone that extra mile to make things a lot more interesting for kids.

Haldon Forest 24.09.16

We get to the forest and as usual Charlie (the dog) waits until the poo bin is out of site before doing his business so there goes Daddy in the background back to the bin.

To pass a bit of time, Isabelle has to do the obligatory dab (of course) that she’s picked up from her brother.

A trip to Haldon Forest

Isabelle is of course stylishly dressed for the forest in a lacy top, cat shorts and ‘fancy wellies’.

A trip to Haldon Forest

Here’s our handsome little man who had chilled out slightly following the car journey. He’s not great in the car, and started off with car sickness and anxiety but he has got better. He was quite nervous and panty on the way there today so it’s nice that he enjoyed it so much making the most of every bit of squelchy muddy grotty bog water he could find.

A Trip to Haldon Forest

This is Daddy and Isabelle exploring because the path is ‘Borrrrring’.

A trip to Haldon forest

This is me all alone in the forest because nobody else is here!

A Trip to Haldon Forest

Ahh that’s where she went!

Off wrestling and catching a crocodile!

A trip to halon forest

Isabelle braving the make shift bridge that she found across the ‘gorge’.

I was a bit disappointed that the myth of the ‘tree people’ came to an end as she finally noticed that they aren’t in fact ‘flying people’ but people up on the Go Ape zip wires.

cake face

Daddy and Isabelle made cupcakes when we got home using baby blue icing paste. They were in fact dark blue and left us with bright blue tongues and lips.

Hope you’re having a great weekend x

Family bucket List 2016 – The Orange Elephant

Family Bucket List 2016 – The Orange Elephant

Yey we’ve ticked another one off the Family Bucket List as we visited The Orange Elephant today.

The Orange Elephant

The kids have both been before but with grandparents so this was a first for both Chris and I and it definitely won’t be the last.

It wasn’t a long journey for us and excitement got the better of Isabelle as the signposts signalled our closeness.

Pulling in there was plenty of parking which is always a bonus.

The view of the entrance and the Meadow was lovely, and then the smell of the pig, cow and sheep pooh took over confirming that we were indeed on a working farm.

Isabelle wasn’t interested in having a look around at all. All she was interested in finding was the icecream selection, all the while wondering what toppings and sauces they had!

She wasn’t disappointed.

There were loads to choose from including Lemon Pavlova, Muddy Green Wellies (you’ll have to visit to find out what that one is) and Mango just to name a few. There was a choice of cones, toppings, sauces and an impressive selection of icecream sundaes.

With all the amazing flavours and the time she took to choose, she chose a plain cone with vanilla icecream, strawberry sauce and marshmallows.

Admission to The Orange Elephant are extremely reasonable and we decided to get a season pass for £12.00 which admits five people (adults or children). The season ends at the end of September, but I’ve got a feeling that we will be making use of the pass.

After paying we were given our orange stickers and our maze map and off we went to find the Summer Meadow.

The Orange Elephant

We encountered sheep, pigs, chickens and cows. The sheep weren’t really bothered with us, but the pigs were quite nosy and we got a great snout picture. A calf came to greet us and the chickens were very friendly.

If you look in the chicken pen, you can see that these are special chickens that lay green eggs!!

We went round the Maize Maze with Isabelle’s excellent map reading skills and then headed for a play in the park.

The Orange Elephant

The Orange Elephant

The Orange Elephant

The Orange Elephant

There were plenty of picnic tables and grassy areas to sit for a picnic.

There were plenty of swings and slides to go on, and an assault course which Isabelle really loves to do.

The Orange Elephant

When she’d finished playing we headed back to the cafe as us parents hadn’t had a chance to taste the icecream!

We chose the  (Award Winning) Lemon Pavlova and the Chocolate Brownie Sundaes which we shared and little cheeky minx managed to wangle another icecream.

The Orange Elephant

The Orange Elephant

I didn’t take a picture but I loved the signs on the toilet doors – Heifers (ladies) and Bulls (Gents).

After finishing our sundaes (very filling indeed) we had another go in the park to round the trip off.

The Orange Elephant

But not before asking about the possibility of having Isabelle’s birthday party there.

So in summary The Orange Elephant is definitely worth a visit, it gets both adult and kid thumbs up, and I would recommend a season pass as it’s somewhere that you can nip to if you have a spare couple of hours to let the kids let off some steam and finish it off with a cheeky ice-cream.

Visit the Orange Elephant Facebook Page to keep up to date with opening times and News.

We’re really happy to say that we’re going to be at the next Baby and Children’s Market on Saturday 25th June 2016.

As well as local business’s like ours there will be lots of Mum’s and Dad’s selling pre-loved baby and children’s clothing, toys, books, games, prams and lots more.

At the last market I watched a Mum and Dad tag team. They had a list of what they wanted and one of them went up one side and the other did the other side, each checking in with the other as they whittled down their list.  They left laden down with all sorts of things for their new baby who had been transferred from the pram into a sling to make way for the things they’d bought!

If you come along, do pop over and say hello.

I have heard that there’s going to be a FREE ball pit for the littles to play in!
